“An Ideal Scenario;” NFL Teams Believe Aaron Rodgers May Be Waiting for Preferred Destination to Come Calling

Former Green Bay Packers and New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a free agent for the first time in his 20-year NFL career. The Packers traded Rodgers to the Jets ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, and the future Pro Football Hall of Famer spent two disappointing years in New York before being released earlier this offseason.

For weeks, it has been presumed that the four-time NFL MVP will sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. That is, he will sign with Pittsburgh if he decides to play football at all. However, Rodgers recently revealed that the delay in his decision is due to the fact that multiple people in his life are currently battling cancer.

That being said, there are some around the league that believe his delay in making a decision about 2025 is because he is waiting for a different team to give in and reach out to him.

Some NFL Teams Believe Aaron Rodgers Is Waiting Out the Minnesota Vikings

After being released by the Jets, Rodgers did not find that there were a large number of teams that were interested in his services. Indeed, the Steelers were the only ones who hosted him for a visit and, reportedly, have extended him a contract offer.

But that does not mean that Rodgers was limiting himself to teams that called him and/or his representatives.

According to multiple reports, the four-time NFL MVP previously reached out to his old NFC North rivals, the Minnesota Vikings, offering to play for them while helping to mentor JJ McCarthy. Minnesota, however, turned him down.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Rodgers may be delaying his decision to sign with Pittsburgh because he is waiting on the Vikings to give in and call him:

“There’s some teams I’ve talked to that are still kind of wondering, ‘Is he just waiting out the Vikings?’ You know, because the Vikings would be an ideal scenario. One of the best play callers in the game in Kevin O’Connell, nine dome games. You’re guaranteed nine home games a year.”

But, despite these things, Fowler does not believe a marriage between Rodgers and Minnesota is likely.

“There’s some element to that, but checking with the Vikings, I still don’t expect that. They’re moving forward with JJ McCarthy. So, he really has no other options, other than Pittsburgh or retire.”

This, of course, will not be breaking news to anyone who has followed the Rodgers Saga all offseason. It also does not take into consideration Rodgers’ own explanation for why he has not signed yet.

And, no matter how one feels about the controversial quarterback, after 20 years in the NFL, he has earned the right to take his time.
