New York Jets Fans Erupt At Decision To Bench Aaron Rodgers For Tyrod Taylor In 32-19 Loss To 49ers

For the second consecutive season in a row, Aaron Rodgers would start but not finish the New York Jets season opener on Monday Night Football. Last year, Rodgers suffered an Achilles injury against the Buffalo Bills on the Jets’ opening drive. On Monday, he was benched for Tyrod Taylor in a blowout loss.

The Jets had a fumble on their opening drive against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. On their second drive, Rodgers led the team down the field before Breece Hall would run it in to give the Jets a 7-3 on the 49ers.

Rodgers would lead one more scoring drive in the game–that ended in a touchdown pass to Allen Lazard in the third quarter. The Jets failed to convert a two-point conversion and trailed the 49ers 26-13.

The 49ers would score two more field goals, and the Jets decided to bench Rodgers for Taylor with 3:55 to go in the fourth quarter. Taylor would lead the Jets on a 12-play drive for 70 yards and a touchdown. Taylor went 6/8 passing for 36 yards and one touchdown.

Taylor was more efficient than Rodgers, who went 13/21 passing for 167 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

The Jets defense didn’t help the offense relax on Monday night. The defensive line badly missed Haason Reddick, who is holding out for a new contract at the start of the season.
