Being chosen for the NFL Coach of the Year is obviously more than winning games. Who helped their team overcome adversity? Who helped their team improve the most? Who surprised everyone with their strategies and mechanisms? There is a lot to consider when choosing the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year. With all of this in mind, below is a comprised list of who may make the cut for this award.
1. Nick Sirianni – Philadelphia Eagles
Sirianni has been largely included in conversations about the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year. It’s understandable, as he was a successful hire in 2021 that transformed the Eagles. They went from a 2-5 to a 9-8 record. Sirianni is also smart when it comes to using the players effectively, especially Jalen Hurts.

2. Kevin O’Connell – Minnesota Vikings
New to the Eagles in 2022, Kevin O’Connell has seven seasons of coaching experience from the Cleveland Browns, San Fransisco 49ers, Washington Redskins, and the Los Angeles Rams. O’Connell is considered an offensive-minded coach, but he wants to be involved in all phases of the game. He understands the importance in each phase and wants to know exactly what is going on. With a current record of 8-0, it’s clear he knows what he’s doing. He’s a solid choice for the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year.
3. Pete Carroll – Seattle Seahawks
Pete Carroll is on this list, not because of a record, but because of his behavior and consistency. He has been regarded as one of the most joyful coaches in the NFL and is full of encouragement. Carroll has been the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks since 2010. With a coaching record of 125-76-1, Carroll is the best coach in the Seahawks’ history. It wouldn’t surprise me to see his efforts recognized this year.
4. Robert Saleh – New York Jets
Robert Saleh has been the head coach for the New York Jets since 2021. With the goal of rebuilding the team, I think it’s safe to say he has made progress with the Jets. He wants to change the negative narrative for the Jets, as well as be attentive of any concerns that are brought to his attention. While I don’t necessarily think he could beat out the above-mentioned coaches, I can see why he would be considered.

5. Brian Daboll – New York Giants
Brian Daboll has brought the gift of surprise with a New York Giants record of 6-2 so far in 2022. He has twenty years of coaching experience and seems to be bringing a lot to the table for his first year coaching the Giants. After all, the Giants only won four games in 2021. Surpassing expectations, I think Daboll is fairly put on the watch list for 2022 NFL Coach of the Year.
Honorable Mention: Mike McDaniel – Miami Dolphins
I’m ready for some backlash on this one. But hear me out. I realize that there was a lot of controversy surrounding McDaniel’s involvement with the Tua Tagovailoa concussion scandal. Regardless of your personal take, McDaniel has remained consistent in support for Tua, as well as claiming to properly follow all concussion procedures on his end. He also has made a lot of progress for the Dolphins in his first year as coach. I can’t put him on the “official” top 5 list because I just don’t see him being awarded the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year above everyone else. I don’t think it’s out of the question for it to happen eventually though.
