Another complication for a 49ers quarterback
The San Francisco 49ers had a lot of bad luck go their way at quarterback all season. Trey Lance was lost in Week 2 and had two surgeries to repair his ankle injuries. Jimmy Garoppolo did well as Lance’s replacement, but he suffered a broken foot in December. Another 49ers quarterback’s future has become a little more complicated.
Rookie Brock Purdy showed enough late in the season and playoffs to be considered a potential starter. Still, he suffered an elbow injury and was ineffective in the 49ers’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. A new report gave an update on Purdy’s recovery.
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Purdy’s doctor recommended he postpone the scheduled surgery due to inflammation in Purdy’s elbow. He’ll go back to visit with doctors in March.
#49ers QB Brock Purdy today visited Dr. Keith Meister, who recommended postponing surgery because of ongoing inflammation in Purdy’s elbow, per sources.
They’ll reconvene in early March. All signs continue to point a UCL repair that would have Purdy ready for the 2023 season.

That throws a wrinkle in the 49ers quarterback offseason plans. Purdy could still be back in time to play during the 2023 season. But he might not. The 49ers plan not to extend Garoppolo next season. The 49ers will need to look for another option to keep them competitive if Lance goes down in the early season and Purdy can return from rehab.
