On Wednesday, the San Francisco 49ers head coach and the general manager gave their end of season press conference together. With the numerous injuries in the quarterback position, there have been a number of questions about what the team will do. In the press conference, head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an essentially definitive answer on if quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will be with the team in 2023.

    49ers Head Coach Update

Veteran quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo will be an unrestricted free agent this coming March. With injuries being a concern, it was questioned if Garoppolo would be returning to the team. This was asked during the press conference, to which 49ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan said he does not see a scenario where that happens.

“I don’t see any scenario with that.”

Shanahan stated that he is happy with quarterbacks Trey Lance and Brock Purdy on the roster, as they can both be starting quarterbacks. The injuries may impact who starts, but either way, it is safe to say Garoppolo will not return in 2023.

Last season it was assumed that Garoppolo would not return; however, now he is a free agent. Last year the team would have had to trade the quarterback, and after needing shoulder surgery, that never happened. It worked out well for the 49ers, due to Lance going down with an ankle injury in week two, but expect Garoppolo to be somewhere else in 2023.

There are a number of places for Garoppolo to go next season. The retirement of Tom Brady also opens up spots, as he was also going to be a free agent this off-season. Some teams to potentially have an interest in Garoppolo are the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Las Vegas Raiders.

The 49ers head coach providing these updates can put these speculations to rest. Either way, it will be an eventful offseason for the San Francisco 49ers and the number of free agents they will need to work to sign again.
