Breaking news in the NFL as the 49ers Defensive Coordinator position has been filled. The 49ers have hired former Panthers Interim Head Coach, Steve Wilks. This was a position that needed to be filled after former 49ers defensive coordinator, DeMeco Ryans became the Houston Texans Head Coach.
49ers Defensive Coordinator
Tom Pelissero broke the news on Twitter after the 49ers brought in Wilks for an interview on Monday. Wilks has been coaching in the league for 15 years, and has made a name for himself as a Defensive Coordinator. Wilks was previously with the Carolina Panthers, where he went 6-6 as the Interim Head Coach. Landing the 49ers Defensive Coordinator position is a strong place for Wilks, after losing out on becoming the Head Coach for the Panthers in 2023.

The 49ers have an already strong defense, ranked number one in the league in 2022. With a defense full of veterans, Wilks is put in a great position to keep the team strong. Wilks also has a history of working defensive backs which can be a great help for the 49ers, as there are many young players there, and the team may be losing some veterans in the offseason due to free agency.
The 49ers have made the NFC Championship three times in the last four years, and a big part of that is due to their strong defense. Now with a new 49ers Defensive Coordinator, the team will look to compete for a Super Bowl title in 2023. Wilks is also a fan favorite, as many people posted on social media hoping he would become the new Defensive Coordinator.
