Brock Purdy’s story in the NFL is one of the most interesting in the league in recent times. Selected last in the 2022 NFL draft, Purdy, who played college football for the Iowa State Cyclones, had a meteoric rise for a player picked so late in his draft.
Taking advantage of opportunities that opened up because of injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, Purdy eventually got the No. 1 quarterback role for the 49ers, even helping the team reach the Super Bowl in the 2023 season.
Then came the time to negotiate for an extension contract with the 49ers, which seemingly did not go smoothly, with both sides not seeing eye to eye.
Purdy reportedly wanted more than $60 million per year but eventually settled with a five-year, $265 million contract extension.
No trade interest for Brock Purdy?

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, before the deal got done, the 49ers tried to kick the tires on the idea of trading Purdy, but interest from other teams was hard to come by.
“There were multiple meetings between the two sides, and I think Brock Purdy’s initial asking price was north of $60 million,” Schefter said (h/t Mike Masala of Niners Wire):. “He was not going to get $60 million. He was not going to become the highest-paid quarterback in football. It didn’t fit into the 49ers’ salary structure. Also, there was the idea that at one point in time that maybe the 49ers would’ve listened for Brock Purdy trade offers. There were no trade offers that came in. There were no teams that really expressed interest, and Brock Purdy’s perfect for (the 49ers)… They didn’t view him, right now, as this $60+ million quarterback. His initial ask, I believe, was about $65 million.”
Apparently, many still don’t see Purdy as someone who can succeed the way that he does with the 49ers with another team.
In any case, Purdy got a massive new contract, and with the QB1 job in San Francisco still in the bag.
