Ohio State never has an issue finding the top players in the country, and every year, they are among the Top Five recruiting teams in the nation.
Big name after big name commits to the Buckeyes, but sometimes those players rethink their decision, and that’s what happened with one of Ohio State’s big commitments.
Ohio State Loses A Top Player
According to 247sports.com, Ohio State has the number one recruiting class in 2025, with three 5-stars and 19 four-stars committed to the program.
However, the Buckeyes lost a player in the 2025 class, and according to Hayes Fawcett, “Four-Star EDGE Zahir Mathis has decommitted from Ohio State.”
Mathis is from Philadelphia and has been committed to the Buckeyes since January of this year.

Mathis is 16 best EDGE in his class, according to 247sports.com, and there is a great chance his de-commitment means another great EDGE in the 2025 class could be committing to the Buckeyes soon.
Ohio State fans shouldn’t worry too much about losing Mathis because you never know what Ryan Day has up his sleeve. Who knows, there is still a chance he will recommit to the school sometime over the next few months.
