Following the Boise State Broncos’ Fiesta Bowl loss to Penn State, the Broncos recognized the end of an era. Ashton Jeanty will be headed to the NFL. Dirk Koetter is leaving the offensive coordinator position to Nate Potter (and Matt Miller). As the dust settles, we begin to wonder what this team’s offensive identity looks like in 2025. They have a stable of impressive running backs, with each looking to follow in Ashton Jeanty’s footsteps.

But Boise State cannot lean on the run game as much as they did in 2024 and expect to have sustained success in modern football. They need to fix the pass game. Since the end of the season, Prince Strachan has transferred to USC, but the team has mostly stayed intact. But this team needs more firepower at wide receiver. Cameron Camper and LaTrell Caples have shown flashes but have been mired by drops and inconsistency. So how can the team address this issue?
The Recruiting Class Needs to Contribute Right Away
Boise State has brought in six receivers as part of their recruiting class. In the past, Boise State’s leading receivers are transfers or homegrown talent that has been with the team for a couple of seasons. But if Boise State wants to fix the passing game, they’ll need some freshman to step up big.
Who Could Boise State Still Target in the Transfer Portal?
The transfer portal still has decent options for Boise State, with receivers from some big programs still uncommitted. Here are a few options that Boise State could target:
- Washington State’s Joshua Meredith had 472 yards on the season and would come in as a contributor. If he had the potential to really step in as a WR1, could he up his game?
- Penn State’s Omari Evans is one of the best receivers in the portal right now and is a bit of a stretch for the Boise State Broncos. But if Evans is looking to be the guy, he’d certainly make his mark for the Broncos.
- Arizona State’s Troy Omeire is a big bodied receiver at 6’4” and is experienced. Perhaps his experience could help the other receivers grow.
Could Boise State Discover Their Own Two-Way Star?
Boise State fans are well aware of Travis Hunter’s accomplishments in 2024. The two-way star excelled at cornerback and wide receiver, leading to a thought-provoking question for fans and coaches- what other players could play both sides of the ball? The Broncos receivers dropped a lot of passes last year, and their defensive backs dropped a number of interceptions. But could any of their defensive backs thrive as receivers, whether as a two-way player or with a straight across position change? It would be worth investigating for coach Spencer Danielson.

The Key to a Balanced Offense
Regardless of how it’s done, the Broncos need to be more balanced if they want to tango with the big boys. Jeanty’s performance against Penn State was incredible, as the defense stacked the box and made Jeanty work for every yard. But that was a once-in-a-generation back that we were watching. Even he needed help from the passing game.
