Just one week after the Iowa Hawkeyes landed their highest recruit ever in offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor, another 2023 recruit has committed to the football program. On Wednesday July 7th, defensive end Kenneth Merrieweather (6-foot-3, 235 pounds) announced on Twitter that he had committed to the University of Iowa. The 3-star prospect from Detroit also had offers from fellow Big Ten rivals Illinois, Indiana, and Purdue.

Despite receiving offers from 17 schools, Merrieweather’s only official visit was to the University of Iowa. Merrieweather was quick to commit to the Hawkeyes after his visit on June 24th.
Nationally, Merrieweather is the No. 69 DE according to the 247Sports Composite. In the state of Michigan, he was ranked No. 15. Merrieweather went to Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School, located in Detroit.
Hawkeye fans will be hoping that Merrieweather can help pressure opposing quarterbacks in the near future. During the 2021 season, the Hawkeyes ranked No. 68 overall in team sacks.
Merrieweather will be joining defensive coordinator Phil Parker’s highly touted defense, a defense that ranked No. 17 in total defense during the 2021 season. The Hawkeyes hope to maintain their impressive defensive results this upcoming season.
The Detroit native is the 16th commitment for Iowa’s 2023 class. According to the 247Sports Composite, Iowa ranks No. 18 overall in 2023 recruiting. Iowa has also extended an offer to Messiah Blair, Merrieweather’s teammate at Martin Luther King. Blair is another 3-star defensive end, so it’ll be interesting to see how Merrieweather’s commitment impacts his decision.
Iowa fans may have to wait another year to see Merrieweather put on the black and gold, but the future is looking bright for the Hawkeyes.
