With the season coming to a close, there are many Rutgers players to watch as the Scarlet Knights put together their best effort to get wins. This weekend, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights will face the Penn State Nittany Lions in hopes to pull off an upset. Here are three Rutgers players to watch against the Nittany Lions.

Rutgers Players to Watch: Christian Braswell

Senior defensive back, Christian Braswell has played with the Scarlet Knights for just one year. He played for Temple from 2018 to 2020, and there are no 2021 statistics for him. Although Braswell is not a top college football defender, he has two more games to prove himself if he wants to move on to the NFL. Braswell is one of the Rutgers players to watch this weekend against Penn State.

In his collegiate career so far, Braswell has a total of 91 combined tackles, 72 of which are solo. He also has a total of 17 pass deflections, three forced fumbles, and six interceptions, according to ESPN. An edge that Braswell has is that he has scored two defensive touchdowns, one of which was for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights have had a difficult time with scoring, and defensive touchdowns can truly help the team.

This season Braswell has done pretty well. According to Sports Reference, Braswell has had a total of 31 combined tackles, 20 of which have been solo. He has also had six pass deflections and three interceptions for 13 yards and one touchdown. While Penn State has strong offensive weapons, quarterback, Sean Clifford can be inaccurate at times. With only two games left of the season, Braswell is one of the Rutgers players to watch as he tries to prove he can continue playing at the next level.

Rutgers Players to Watch: Tyreem Powell

Sophomore linebacker Tyreem Powell has been an underrated player for the Scarlet Knights. Powell has been with the team for two years, and in his second year, he has made a big impact. Understanding that the Scarlet Knight’s defense has been a big factor in the team’s winning, Powell is one of the Rutgers players to watch.

As he is only a sophomore, Powell only has two years’ worth of statistics. According to ESPN, Powell has a total of 77 combined tackles, 37 of which are solo, and three sacks. Powell also has had three pass deflections and one interception for five yards. The statistics from his freshman season to this year have shown a great increase, demonstrating his ability to improve.

This season, Powell has a total of 60 combined tackles, 25 of which are solo, and three sacks, according to Sports Reference. Powell also has three pass deflections. With his three sacks this year, Powell has the second most for the team, trailing behind Wesley Bailey who has a total of 3.5 sacks. Powell will be one of the Rutgers players to watch against the Nittany Lions, especially as he tries to make a name for himself

Rutgers Players to Watch: Avery Young

Senior defensive back Avery Young is one of the top players on the Scarlet Knights. He is even one of their NFL draft prospects. With only two games left of the season, Young is going to play his best in order to be looked at by NFL scouts.

After spending five years with the Scarlet Knights, Young has put up pretty decent statistics. According to ESPN, Young has a total of 271 combined tackles, 149 of them solo, and two sacks. Young also has had 23 pass deflections. So far, in his freshman year, Young had the most pass deflections with ten in 2018. As for turnovers, Young has four forced fumbles and three interceptions. With two games left of the season, Young is one of the Rutgers players to watch, as he continuously shows improvement.

This season, Young has a total of 64 combined tackles, 33 of which have been solo, according to Sports Reference. Young also has only one interception this season, but that could change this weekend. Penn State quarterback, Sean Clifford has thrown seven interceptions this season, according to ESPN, and Young has a chance to force more.

The Scarlet Knights will face off against the Nittany Lions this Saturday at 3:30 eastern. There are a number of Rutgers players to watch, but be sure to observe these three in the last home game of the season.
