Today, the Minnesota Vikings received some devastating news. Promising rookie QB J.J. McCarthy reportedly tore his meniscus, per Jordan Sigler of Gridiron Heroics.
Now, depending on whether the surgical procedure is a trim or full repair, McCarthy could end up being out for several months. As a result, the Vikings may want some insurance in case Sam Darnold does not work out. Here are three quarterbacks Minnesota may consider going after to replace McCarthy.
1. Ryan Tannehill
Right now, Ryan Tannehill is the most notable free agent at the quarterback position. He is a long-time veteran in the NFL, having been drafted way back in 2012. After a volatile tenure with the Miami Dolphins, Tannehill salvaged his career with the Tennessee Titans.
Unfortunately, for Tannehill, he ended up suffering a high ankle sprain that kept him out for a good portion of the 2023 season. During that time, rookie QB Will Levis shined, and he ended up permanently taking the Titans’ starting quarterback position from Tannehill.
The Vikings would have to make sure Tannehill is fully recovered from his high ankle sprain. However, if there are no issues with that ankle, he could prove to be a very valuable addition for the Vikings.
2. Taylor Heinicke
While Taylor Heinicke is not a free agent, he could be someone worth pursuing for Minnesota. A big reason for this is the team he plays for. Right now, he is the third quarterback on the Atlanta Falcons’ depth chart.
As a result, the Falcons have quarterbacks to spare and could find it worth it to get assets from a more desperate team (Vikings). While he did not have the best year for Atlanta last season, a change of scenery could be just what he needs.
3. Tommy DeVito
This last proposal comes with certain strings attached. For starters, Drew Lock would likely need to be fully recovered from his injury. However, all signs point to Lock being healthy before Week 1 of the regular season.
Another aspect of this is the timing of a potential Tommy DeVito trade to the Vikings. You see, the Minnesota Vikings face the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in their season opener. It would create quite an awkward situation if DeVito started for the Vikings in that opener. As a result, Minnesota would likely have to be willing to wait a few weeks to get this deal done if this is something they want to pursue.
