Careers are not as long in the National Football League as they are in other professional sports due to the constant contact in the sport. However, being a two-time Super Bowl Champion definitely helps as they check some boxes of what they wanted to do in the sport. Injuries are another reason why players decide to retire before they play a massive role in their lives and that is what seemingly has happened on Saturday afternoon.
Shaquil Barrett posted on his Instagram that he is announcing his retirement from the National Football League.
“It’s time for me to hang it up. It’s been a great ride and I appreciate everything that came with it over the years. I’m ready to shift my full focus to my wife and kids and helping them realize there dreams and catch em. Anyone who caught their dreams before know the work, time and consistency required to reach them. I’m ready to start bulding them skills up in my kids which will take 100% commitment. IK to some it’ll be a surprise but I’ve been thinking about this for a while and the decision has never been more clear then it is now.”
Shaquil Barrett signed with the Miami Dolphins this offseason after spending five years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and four seasons with the Denver Broncos. He was part of the Super Bowl 50 and Super Bowl LV victories to make him a two-time Super Bowl Champion.
Barrett had a strong career as he would lead the NFL in sacks with 19.5 during the 2019 season and make a pair of Pro Bowls in his career. He also would recorded four sacks and an interception over the course of 11 playoff games. Barrett would not be the only player to announce their retirement as running back Kenyan Drake retired on Friday,
What do the Miami Dolphins do after the retirement of a two-time Super Bowl Champion?
Shaq Barrett was expected to provide a lot of veteran experience and ability to the Miami Dolphins during the 2024 NFL season. With Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips placed on the PUP list this week, the linebacker depth for the team has been taking a massive blow.
This is also the Dolphins team that nearly collapsed in the second half of last season and lost in the AFC Wild Card Round 26-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs on the road after losing the AFC East crown. They are going to be in the market for some linebackers but it can be tough until roster cuts begin to happen for teams.
Losing a two-time Super Bowl champion is difficult in itself but the Miami Dolphins are in a tough position right now.
