The 2025 FCS Kickoff is one of the biggest games in the FCS schedule, and the game was exciting throughout between the Mercer Bears and the UC Davis Aggies. The weather was not holding up and the game went into a lightning delay on Saturday night, but a controversial decision was made regarding the conclusion of the game.
Let’s take a deeper dive into the 2025 FCS Kickoff and discuss what exactly happened.
2025 FCS Kickoff Declared a “No Contest”

The 2025 FCS Kickoff was between the UC Davis Aggies and the Mercer Bears and it was a one-score game halfway through the fourth quarter. These teams are both some of the top-ranked programs in the FCS, but the game will not be finished or counted.
Both Mercer and UC Davis announced that the game was declared a “no contest”, meaning the game will not be continued or made up.
“Tonight’s 11th Annual FCS Kickoff has been declared a ‘No Contest’ due to rain and intermittent lightning that has continued through central Alabama. All statistics from tonight’s game have been voided,” said the Mercer Bears on social media.
“NO CONTEST. Mother Nature wins the day as tonight’s game in Montgomery has been called a no contest,” wrote the UC Davis Aggies’ social media post.
The 2025 FCS Kickoff is the 11th-annual event and the game was under a weather delay for about 90 minutes. These teams will not play again this season and nothing that happened on the field for the first 50+ minutes of gametime will be represented in the statistics.
While it certainly is not the result anyone wanted out of the 2025 FCS Kickoff, it will be interesting to see how these teams do throughout the season.
