During a team practice earlier this offseason, Denver Broncos wideout Tim Patrick suffered a torn ACL in his right knee. With Patrick likely out for the year, we can expect to see much more of the rising fifth-year receiver, Courtland Sutton. Here’s why Sutton should be on every fantasy owner’s radar ahead of this upcoming NFL season.
Sutton’s NFL Career
Denver selected Sutton with the 40th pick in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. In his impressive rookie campaign, the SMU alum recorded 704 receiving yards and four touchdowns. In year two, however, Sutton established himself as one of Denver’s go-to wideouts. Throughout his 2019 NFL season, Sutton hauled in 72 catches, good for nearly 1,200 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
Due to an ACL tear suffered in September of 2020, Sutton missed the majority of his third year. Despite his battles with injury, the receiver bounced back in year four to help make an impact on Denver’s offense. Last season, Sutton posted nearly 800 yards through the air and added two TDs.
While Sutton’s production may not appear overly impressive, it’s important to consider Denver’s quarterback situation throughout his short career. In the last three years, the Broncos have started a number of subpar QBs, including Brett Rypien, Drew Lock, and Teddy Bridgewater.
2022 Expectations
Earlier this offseason, Denver traded for nine-time Pro Bowler and future hall of fame QB Russel Wilson. Wilson’s ability to throw the deep ball should pair nicely with Sutton’s ability to win 50/50 jump ball situations. In addition, as a part of Denver’s agreement with Wilson’s former team, the Broncos did away with their tight end, Noah Fant. This, along with Patrick’s injury, should produce more targets for Sutton than initially expected.
With Wilson under center, expect Courtland Sutton to take a big leap in his fifth year. Look for Sutton to be selected 18th-23rd in the WR position for your fantasy football draft, with a potential increase in value as the season progresses.
