Due to a productive offseason for the Las Vegas Raiders, Derek Carr will now enter the 2022 season with arguably the best receiving corps in his NFL career. Here’s why recent changes to the Raiders offense have capitulated Carr into QB1 conversations.
Derek Carr’s 2021 Season
In 2021, Carr led Las Vegas to the playoffs with a respectable 10-7 record. Along the way, the 31-year-old recorded a better than average 16 points per game to finish 13th in fantasy football quarterback rankings. Carr threw for a personal best, 4,800 yards, and found the end zone 23 times. Throughout the season he favored his Pro Bowl receiver, Hunter Renfrow, and standout tight end, Darren Waller. In 2021, Renfrow had a breakout year, hauling in over 1,000 receiving yards and 9 TDs. Troubled by injury, Waller was limited to starting in only 13 games. Nonetheless, he showed promising signs for a strong return in 2022.
Altogether, Carr’s 2021 fantasy season could be categorized as good but not great. It felt like the decision to start Carr was taken week by week and was never considered a consistent option. Perhaps the 9-year veteran needed more variety at the WR position to take him from decent to top 10. Well, that’s exactly what he got.
Davante Adams Will Make The Difference
With the recent acquisition of Davante Adams, the Raiders offense will surely be one to fear in 2022. The former Green Bay Packer has been regarded as one of the NFL’s most talented wideouts since his breakout season back in 2016. In his eight-year career, Adams has been selected to the Pro Bowl five times, recorded over 8,000 receiving yards, and scored 73 times. Although Carr and Adams will be joining forces for the first time in their NFL careers, their bond actually began a decade ago. Both were teammates at Fresno State from 2012 to 2013. In that span, the duo posted 3,031 receiving yards and a whopping 38 touchdowns.
With Adams headlining the Raider’s receiving corps, Derek Carr will have plenty of talented options to target this upcoming season. Look for Carr and Adams to rekindle their chemistry in 2022 and for Adams to continue his dominance at the WR position. You can expect Carr to be a viable starter for fantasy owners in standard 12-team leagues. This duo will surely be fun to watch.
