Just one week remains until the Boston College Eagles kick off their first game of the season against Rutgers. Still, much remains in the air as to how the Eagles’ starting lineup will look on Saturday. With 12 new additions to the roster over this past offseason, many are questioning how much the starting lineup will have shifted since the Eagles 2021 season. Lets break down who you can expect to see in the starting lineup of Jeff Hafley’s Eagles in Saturday’s home opener against the Scarlet Knights.
Boston College Eagles Depth Chart Predictions-Offense
Quarterback: #5 Phil Jurkovec
The Eagles’ roster boasts seven quarterbacks this season, but it is more than clear that the 6’5″ redshirt senior will crack the starting lineup for BC for all ten games. Jurkovec had a rough 2021 season due to a hand injury that occurred early in week two. However, he will surely be motivated to seize his final season as a college quarterback. If he plays as well as he did in his record setting 2,700 yard sophomore season and keeps injuries away, it is clear that he will dominate the field on opening night and all games to come for the Eagles.
Running back: #5 Pat Garwo III
Small but deadly, the 5’8″ powerhouse redshirt junior will be continue to stand-out in the Atlantic Division’s running game for another season to come. The former #1 high school running back in Pennsylvania boasted over 1,000 yards and a touchdown in nearly every game he played last season, and will be sure to break through Rutgers defensive line for some big carries on Saturday.
Wide Receivers: Jaden Williams, Jaelen Gill, Zay Flowers
This year’s Eagles’ receiving class will be one to remember, with three incredibly talented targets. The WR-X spot will be filled by #0 Jaden Williams, a sophomore boasting three touchdowns from just 16 receptions in his freshmen season. The WR-Z spot will be taken by the redshirt senior #1 Jaelen Gill, who racked up 24 receptions in just 9 games last season. Finally, the WR-SLOT spot will be filled by Zay Flowers, the flexible senior with nearly 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns over his career with the Eagles.
Tight End: #80 George Takacs
The Eagles’ roster have multiple tight ends but none stand out nearly as much as the transfer from Notre Dame. Despite seeing little game action and few targets in his four years at Notre Dame, he still put up an impressive 2 touchdown and 78 yards, and BC fans are hopeful that his fresh start with the Eagles will be one to remember.
Offensive Line:
LT: #70 Ozzy Trapilo, Redshirt Sophomore
LG: #74 Finn Dirstine, Redshirt Senior
OC: #66 Kendall Drew, Redshirt Freshman
RG: #79 Kevin Cline, Redshirt Sophomore
RG: #67 Jack Conley, Redshirt Junior
All five members of the Eagles’ 2021 offensive line are coming back for another season. With a star Quarterback behind them, it is of the utmost important that they continue to serve as a brick wall of protection against the tough defensive lines that they will face throughout the 2022 season.
Boston College Eagles Depth Chart Predictions-Defense
Defensive Line:
LDE: #97 Marcus Valdez, Graduate Student
DT: #96 Cam Horsley, Junior
DT: #92 Izaiah Henderson, Redshirt Junior
RDE: #11 Shitta Silah, Senior
This year’s defensive line is entirely made up of veteran Eagles, bringing expectations that these young men will be better than ever before. Their years of experience with each other should contribute to a strong defensive line. This group of individual powerhouses is expected to push through the Scarlet Knights’ offensive line and put some serious pressure against Noah Vedrel on Saturday and will continue to do so against every opponent they face throughout the season.
Linebackers, Safeties, and Cornerbacks
LB: #5 Kam Arnold, Junior
LB: #42 Vinny DePalma, Redshirt Senior
SS: #9 Jaden Woodbey, Redshirt Senior
FS: #3 Jason Maitre, Graduate Student
CB: #00 CJ Burton, Sophomore
CB: #20 Elijah Jones, Redshirt Senior
Once again, this group of linebackers, safeties and cornerback is full of Eagle veterans who have been teammates for years. This factor should play into a dominant pass defense for the 2022 season. Combined, this group of young men boast hundreds of tackles and forced incompletions, and will continue to dominate opposing offenses.
The Boston College Eagles struggled last year as they transitioned into a new era, but with a stacked roster of veterans, this year is looking up. It all comes down to Saturday, where we will see the Eagles come into form against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
