2021 Recap

The 2021 Steelers were one difficult team to watch throughout the regular season. The Steelers offense averaged just 20.2 points per game which ranked 21st in the NFL. Pittsburgh’s defense gave up 23.4 points per game which ranked 20th in the NFL. If it wasn’t for DPOY TJ Watt and the defense’s ability to get to the quarterback, the Steelers had a rather poor season defensively. Opposing teams gained more rushing yards than Pittsburgh in 14 of the 19 games they played in the 2021 season. During the middle of the regular season, Pittsburgh gave up 100+ rushing yards in eight straight games. The lack of run defense kept the offense off of the field and made time of possession an issue for the steelers. Whether or not QB Ben Roethlisberger could perform at a high level was the big question heading into the season. Right away, it was evident that Big Ben had little to no mobility in the pocket. This was another factor kept the Steelers offense ineffective throughout the season.

The Steelers biggest losses are obviously going to be veteran CB Joe Haden and WR JuJu Smith-Schuster. Haden was arguably the Steelers best defensive back when it came to pass defense. Smith-Schuster was a physical WR who had his moments. Neither of these guys are irreplaceable by any means, but it will be important for Pittsburgh to find some guys to fill these roles effectively in time for the regular 2022-2023 regular season.
Key Additions:
- Kenny Pickett
- Mitch Trubisky
- George Pickens
- James Daniels
- DeMarvin Leal
- Levi Wallace
- Myles Jack
- Calvin Austin
- Mason Cole
- Tyson Alualu
The 2 newly acquired QBs will be the main focus of most of the Steelers offseason. It will be an exciting time in Pittsburgh to finally have a new QB under center with a completely different looking team than even a year prior. LB Myles Jack will add some needed depth at the linebacker position and George Pickens will add depth to the WR core. WR Calvin Austin is a speedy player who can be used in a variety of ways. The Steelers will most definitely have growing pains throughout the season, but it can’t be much worse than what they had on the field last year.
Pittsburgh Steelers Schedule:
The Steelers schedule is the 13th toughest in the NFL. Opponents have a .513 winning percentage which is pretty much right in the middle of the pack. The toughest part of Pittsburgh’s schedule is their division. The AFC North is one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL, if not the most competitive. The Browns and Bengals used to live in the basement but not anymore. It will be crucial for the Steelers to at least split games in the division to avoid slipping down the standings.
Pittsburgh Steelers Betting Breakdown:
Steelers OVER (7.5) wins. After looking through the Steelers 2022 schedule, I’m confident that there are at least 8 games that can be won. Despite the unknowns with this team, I like the coaching staff and I like the direction the organization is headed without veteran Ben Roethlisberger.
Najee Harris OVER (1120.5) Rushing Yards. The Steelers are going to lean on RB Najee Harris if they are going to have any success at all. As seen last year, Pittsburgh struggled when they couldn’t get the run game going. Najee’s experience last year will only help him this next season and I feel that 1120 rushing yards can be passed with around 2-3 games left in the regular season.
