Besides fantastic quarterback play, quality coaching can quickly turn an NFL’s fortunes around.
We don’t usually associate both of these things with the Washington Commanders as they are currently without either of these things. However, they could have addressed one of these issues without having to rely on the magic of the NFL draft.

They could have had a talented HC if they picked up one of their coaching staff in 2013 to take the lead.
Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay headline elite Washington Commanders staff
Ari Meirov posted an interesting tidbit on X that would be fascinating to many NFL fans. Well, maybe except the Commanders.
The 2013 Washington coaching staff now has five NFL head coaches, and there could still be a sixth:
– Kyle Shanahan
– Sean McVay
– Matt LaFleur
– Mike McDaniel

– Bobby Slowik pic.twitter.com/v5R8JUrldl— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) January 25, 2024
It’s quite a sight to see that many of the coaches who once called D.C. their home are now at the helm of their own NFL teams. This would surely rub plenty of salt in the wounds of Washington fans who wished they would have kept one of these men to help them compete in the NFC East through the 2010s.

If you’re wondering why the Commanders had such a wealth of talent at their disposal then, many would point you to one person: Mike Shanahan.
The legendary coach ended his career in D.C with an abysmal 3-13 record. However, it’s quite clear to everyone that every single one under his coaching tree developed well during their time working for him.
Where are these 2013 coaches now?
If we have to pick a golden child among the coaching staff, it would have to be Sean McVay. He already has a Super Bowl title under his belt with the Los Angeles Rams and is doing wonders with Matthew Stafford in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year.

Kyle Shanahan–Mike’s son–is currently in a deep playoff run with the San Francisco 49ers after beating Matt LaFleur’s Green Bay Packers in the Divisional rounds. Mike McDaniel is a media darling who is also cooking up big plays with the Miami Dolphins. The Falcons look set to sign Raheem Morris as their next HC. Bobby Slowik is the offensive coordinator of the overachieving Houston Texans and is probably the next man to get a head coaching gig.
Washington fans are probably wondering if they would have kept any of them in 2014 without Dan Snyder in the picture at this point.
