While LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has dominated on the field, many analysts and scouts suspect it is due to the system.
Nussmeier has been the quarterback tasked with stepping in after the past two players at the position for LSU have won the Heisman Trophy. Both Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels won the trophy, and now pass the baton to Nussmeier as he takes the reins of the Tigers offense.
A season ago, LSU put up historic offensive numbers while the defense ranked historically terrible for the program. Through the air specifically, the LSU Tigers were one of the worst defensive units in college football last season. The situation was so dire the team was essentially forced into making a coordinator change due to the criticism brought upon the program.
Garrett Nussmeier/Kyren Lacy might be the most fun QB/WR duo in CFB right now

Despite the disappointment that the defense presented, one player on offense brought hope coming into this season for the LSU Tigers. Nussmeier was a four-star commitment in the 2021 recruiting class and sat to wait his turn. After three patient seasons, Nussmeier is finally able to take over the starting role, and has done exceptionally well thus far.
Currently, the quarterback is considered to be one of the best at the collegiate level, with his name being thrown around in preseason Heisman Trophy discussions.
LSU Tigers Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier Succeeding Despite Slipping NFL Projections
While Nussmeier has been playing seemingly well, his apparent NFL hopes are slowing starting to dwindle according to NFL scouts and draft analysts.
Nussmeier has been known as a big-armed, accurate quarterback that is able to deliver strikes down the field. Along with this, Nussmeier is also known to be a crafty quarterback that always appears to find a hole for the open receiver. The only real downside that has been clear for Nussmeier is his limited mobility, which at times results in big hits that the quarterback does not need to take.
If there’s one thing about Garrett Nussmeier he’s gonna throw a 50/50 ball into double coverage

FWIW I haven’t spoken to a single NFL source who has a high grade on Garrett Nussmeier
— Ryan Roberts (@RiseNDraft) October 10, 2024
Nussmeier currently has 1652-yards passing and 15 touchdowns for the LSU Tigers while throwing just four interceptions. The quarterback also has a rating of 84.2 this season, placing him at 11th-overall in college football this season. Nussmeier is currently on track to record 40 touchdowns through the air for the LSU Tigers offense during the 2024 season.
It is very possible that Nussmeier will not become a top-level NFL quarterback, but the suggestion that his stocked has already dropped seems far fetched.
